Melbourne is one of Australia’s leading centres for parasitology research in Australia. Melbourne has a worldwide reputation for excellence, with the University of Melbourne, La Trobe and Monash Universities and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research being leaders in parasitological research. Things to see and do in Melbourne Laneways and arcades: Al fresco eateries, one-off shops and bars that are off the beaten track, all side-by-side in laneways winding in all directions throughout the city. For food you are best to try Hardware Lane, Degraves Street, Centre Place, Block Place or The Causeway. There’s also hidden lanes on either side of Chinatown. To find a bars try Meyers Place, Bennetts Lane, Cohen Place, Sniders Lane and Market Lane. There are also over 260 boutiques within Melbourne’s historic and Royal Arcadeornate arcades, each with its own individual charm. From Block Arcade’s (1891) Italian interior to Melbourne’s oldest trading Royal Arcade (1869), walking through these historical icons will not only alow you to apreciate the cities architecture, it will also give you the chance to uncover many of Melbourne's hidden gems. The Fitzroy Gardens: The Fitzroy Gardens are one of the major 19th century landscaped city gardens in Australia. They are a popular tourist attraction, with historic buildings, sculptures and horticulture. In the gardens you can find Cooks' Cottage, original home of Captain James Cook, one of the first Europeans to chart Australia's east coast. Another feature of the gardens is the Conservatory (1930), housing magnificent indoor floral displays. MCG: Since the Melbourne Cricket Club moved to the ground in 1853, the MCG has established a marvellous history, hosting international cricket including the first-ever Test and the 1992 World Cup final, countless VFL/AFL Grand Finals, and the 1956 Olympic Games. NGV Gallery: Australia’s oldest public art museum featuring blockbuster exhibitions and one of the world’s finest art collections. Eureka Skydeck 88: View Melbourne from the highest public viewing platform in the Southern Hemisphere. Level 88, Eureka Tower, 7 Riverside Quay, Southbank. Queen Victoria Market: Everything from fruit and vegetables to gourmet foods, fashion and general merchandise at this Melbourne institution. Corner of Elizabeth and Franklin streets. Old Melbourne Gaol: Get a sense of life behind bars during the 19th century. Infamous bushranger, Ned Kelly, was one of 135 prisoners hanged at this historical gaol. Russell Street. Shrine of Remembrance: The Shrine of Remembrance is Victoria’s memorial to the service and sacrifice of its men and women in times of conflict and war. Birdwood Avenue, South Yarra. State Library of Victoria: One of Australia’s oldest cultural institutions.
